What You Need to Know About Car Insurance

What You Need to Know About Car Insurance

If you own a car, you would know that car insurance and road tax has to be renewed every year. How much you pay depends on your profile (age, gender, driving experience, occupation, claims history), your vehicle’s profile (make & model) and the type of coverage.

It’s important to understand the different kinds of coverage availability to see what is most cost-efficient for you.

1) Third-party Only
Covers death or bodily injuries to third-parties and/or passengers; and damage to third-party's property.

2) Third-party, Fire & Theft
Extension of the third-party Only policy. Protects the insured's own car against loss or damage (caused directly by fire or theft). Other causes resulting in loss or damage to the insured's own car is not covered.

3) Comprehensive
This type of policy offers the broadest protection for a car owner. Covers the insured's liabilities; bodily injury, death and property damage to third-parties (including passengers). It also covers damage to the insured's own car (own damage).

The common coverage to go for is comprehensive. Cars are expensive in Singapore, better to be safe than sorry.

Keeping a Good Profile

Here are some very important factors to decrease the cost of your next car insurance policy.

1) Maintain a no-claims record
This means there shouldn't be any own damage (OD) claims / any other claims against you. Claims against another driver would not affect your record. This would enable you to enjoy a discount (NCD) off the premium, ranging from 10 - 50 %. (see table below)

2) Maintain a demerit points free driving record*
Eligible for drivers that do not have any demerit points awarded for the past 3 yrs. An additional 5% off the premium (*only for drivers with NCD of 30% or more).

3) No Claim Discount - NCD (or NCB)
NCD is discount (in % off the premium) extended to the car owner for maintaining a claims-free record whilst insured*. NCD is transferable among all motor insurers in Singapore. It is also transferable within parent / child / spouse.

How to Get Cheap Car Insurance?

You can’t change your profile or your car profile, but you can play around with the type of coverage you want. Also, different insurance companies will be able to offer different prices. It’s always good to do some research and comparison before making any purchase. It’s possible to save from few hundred up to thousands.

The Con

Not everyone can get a good rate from the insurance company, especially if you are just a call-in customer. Worse of all, it takes a lot of time to call up every insurance company and talk to more than 20 sales representatives. Every company you talk to will claim to be the best package.

Why is Car Insurance SG Important For You?

If you have not compared at least 6-7 quotes from different car insurance companies, you may be leaving heaps of cash on the table.

This is a relatively simple concept, yet few car owners actually do it. Why is that so? Because although this IS simple, it may not be easy.

Just imagine... an automobile (or motorcycle) owner begins to contact so many motor insurance companies to ask for quotes... Later, he (or she) has to reject and shrug off most of these insurance agents who tries to persuade the car owner to take up their company's auto insurance. THIS is really a daunting task for the average car owner.

There is however a solution to all these hassle.

Popular websites provides a service to compare between several companies' car insurance quotes. Usually, you can pick a reasonably competitive auto insurance company by comparing about 6-7 quotations side-by-side. This service goes WAY beyond that, so you can be assured that you're getting the best deal.

At this point in time, I'll need to caution you about CHEAP auto insurance. The fact is, the cheapest car insurance may turn out to be the most expensive. This is because these insurance companies may take ages (in fact, FOREVER!) to process your claims, giving all sorts of phony excuses.

However these companies that give consumers poor claims experience are simply dropped from the service's list to protect its clients.

By comparing among the established auto insurers, you are most able to get a good coverage for yourself and get the most bang for your buck.

This is a commonly known auto insurance comparison "trick". Yet surprisingly it's not used by many car owners, until recently.

How is Your Car Insurance Premium Calculated?

Car insurance premiums are priced according to the risk level insurers have to bear. Your knowledge of how they determine this risk level can also help you get the best deal out of your next car insurance policy.

In general, these are major factors that insurers take into consideration:

1. Make and Model of Vehicle, Engine Capacity & Age of vehicle

Generally the more visually attractive & higher-performing cars with high engine capacity will attract the highest car insurance premiums

2. Nature of Vehicle Usage (private use/corporate use/commercial use/hire, etc.)

Premiums change with different types of vehicle utilization. This is because the exposure to risk is higher for vehicles meant for commercial use or hire.

3. Age, Sex and Occupation of Driver

Insurers are biased – they tend to offer females better rates than males and prefer older drivers under seventy years old than young, inexperienced drivers. For the occupation of the driver, most insurers only classify them according to indoor or outdoor work.

4. Marital Status of Insured

Married drivers are charged less than single ones – sometimes this difference can be as much as 7%.

5. Driver experience (Number of Years)

Most insurers would not even bother to insure drivers who have less than one year’s driving experience and will slap drivers with only a year of driving experience with an exorbitant premium. With more than four years driving experience, you can enjoy better rates than drivers with less.

6. Claims History of Driver

Some insurers decline to quote drivers with a claims history of more than five thousand Singapore dollars. Driver with less than such claim amounts are often accepted, but they are often given very high rates.

7. Type of Cover (Third Party Only, Third Party Fire & Theft or Comprehensive)

The minimum requirement for vehicle insurance in Singapore is Third Party Only insurance, provided the finance company is able to accept this arrangement. This type of insurance costs the least, followed by Third Party Fire & Theft and Comprehensive Coverage Insurance. Generally, it is advisable to take up at least Third Party Fire & Theft coverage instead of just Third Party Only insurance so that you may not be in financial liability if your vehicle is destroyed by either fire or theft, assuming your vehicle is still under hire purchase.

Insurers will give each risk factor a weighting based on a range of statistics and past claims experience -- all these boils down to the business risk that car insurance companies have to take in order to maintain their insurance operation.

The good news is even if you do not understand how all these work, you can still benefit from market inconsistencies if you understand this fact:

Different insurers have different preference for particular brands or models, according to the claims experience in their company. This is more apparent when insuring private vehicles, trucks and commercial vehicles than when it concerns motorcycles.

If you are able to get 6-7 quotes from different insurers, these inconsistencies become crystal clear. Even though their coverage may be the same, their premiums differ -- sometimes by as much as 79%.

Knowing this, you can grab at least six to seven quotes from reputable insurers in Singapore to compare quotes. Then grab the cheapest three to start comparing other features like windscreen coverage, loss of use benefit and workshop provision.

Finally, remember to ask for feedback on their customer service. It is really no use paying for dirt cheap insurance that takes many frustrating months to claim from. This can add undue psychological stress on top of the pressure that you have to cope with while dealing with the after-effects of an accident.

It takes about 2 hours or so just to get six or seven quotes from reputable insurers in Singapore...or you can get online car insurance quotes from a website so that the hard work is done for you.
